WRETCHED REFUSE

The problem with a review like Ed Zuckerman’s of “Rubbish!” is that it can persuade thoughtless consumers that it is OK to toss out throwaways ad lib.
Forget the wasted resources in single-use diapers, forget the pathogens (“Diaper contents are just frosting on the cake,” according to the reviewer).
As for the plentiful potential landfill sites, where exactly would the authors locate the putative “44 miles square” dump to handle all U.S. garbage for 1,000 years?
Good money has been paid to landfill apologists by disposable-diaper manufacturers and other single-use product promoters eager to justify their profits while laying the cost of disposal on the public.
