China Plans New Airport Near Shanghai: China plans to build an international airport in the eastern city of Hangzhou to attract foreign investment to coastal Zhejiang province and nearby Shanghai. Preliminary work on the $183-million airport has begun, China News Service reported. The airport, which will be Hangzhou’s second and Zhejiajg’s sixth, will spur economic development in Zhejiang, already one of China’s more prosperous regions, the wire service said. It also said the airport will boost Shanghai’s Pudong district. Touted as China’s next economic boom town, Shanghai’s Pudong district has been granted an extra measure of autonomy to lure foreign capital.
