The Press : Hussein Versus U.N.--Drawing It Out

It was another showdown with Saddam Hussein this week as the mercurial Iraqi dictator taunted the United Nations--and Washington--and then backed down over nuclear-weapons inspections.
The world’s cartoonists were skeptical about Hussein’s version of the controversial events.
In Amsterdam, one marveled at the unusual mosque architecture in Iraq. Others were impressed with Hussein’s resurrection from military and political obscurity after his defeat in last year’s Persian Gulf War. It appeared that President Bush’s “trophy” was refusing to play dead. And the United Nations, charged with enforcing cease-fire sanctions on Iraq, was feeling like a dart target.
The immediate crisis was defused when Iraq agreed to admit U.N. weapons inspectors into the Agriculture Ministry, where they previously were barred. But just like Hussein, the issue of compliance promises to pop up again.
