A 35-year-old San Diego man was found dead Monday, having drowned in a pond during a camping trip in Julian, the coroner’s office said.
Richard Valdez of Granada Avenue went camping with three friends in Cleveland National Forest on Sunday. About 5 p.m., he left for a walk by himself, the coroner’s office said. When he didn’t return, his friends went to look for him and found his clothing neatly stacked next to a pond near Eagle Peak Road and Cedar Creek Road, officials said.
After the friends searched the area and could not find Valdez, they summoned the Sheriff’s Department. The search and rescue team Monday morning found Valdez’ body, drowned in 9 feet of water.
