EL MONTE : Police Put Up Billboard to Give Mayor a Message

El Monte police want Mayor Patricia Wallach to get the message that her city needs more police.

So, the police officers association Wednesday put up a billboard at Ramona Avenue and Stewart Street, urging residents unhappy with police service to call the mayor. The billboard lists Wallach’s home phone number.

The association is stalled in contract talks and seeks to add 10 police officers to the current force of 118. Although the City Council Tuesday approved adding the officers, Wallach voted against the increase, saying El Monte cannot afford new officers. The city has yet to approve its budget and faces a $600,000 funding gap and uncertainty over state money.

Wallach could not be reached. But her husband, Ed, was philosophical. “We’re in the telephone book,” he shrugged. “It’s just a union action, that’s all.”
