Rick Mearns, a 17-year-old center for the Portland Winter Hawks of the Western Hockey League was killed Friday night in a traffic accident in his hometown of Regina, Canada.
The Winter Hawks said Mearns was one of two people in a car that hit another car from behind, then flipped over several times. The other person in the car was injured.
Portland co-coach Brent Peterson said Mearns was expected to be one of Portland’s top scorers this season and had a good chance to be a high draft choice in the 1993 NHL draft.
