Jury Urges Execution in Girl’s Rape, Murder

A jury recommended Wednesday that Alphonso Howard, 25, die in the gas chamber for raping and murdering 11-year-old Wendy Bustamante in 1988.
It was the first death penalty recommendation returned in a Criminal Courts Building trial since the “Night Stalker” case in 1989, a district attorney’s spokeswoman said.
Howard, 25, will be sentenced Sept. 21.
