THE DEMON BARBER OF GLAMIS: Everyone on stage kept a straight face during the banquet scene on opening night at GroveShakespeare’s “Macbeth.” But “there were major hoots” during intermission, reported star David Birney later.
The problem arose when Birney’s Macbeth, with a bejeweled cross dangling from his neck, reached down to embrace Bill Peters’ Menteth and came up with Peters’ wig speared on the cross. Birney quickly untangled the two objects and threw the wig into the wings, without missing a line.
“You refuse to have anything get in the way of your commitment to the moment,” explained Birney.
“At first I thought it was nice he was bonding with his men,” recalled Peters. But then “I became painfully aware of the night breeze hitting my scalp as it never had before.”
