Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos have entered the $750,000 Miller Lite U.S. pro beach volleyball championships at Hermosa Beach this weekend while threatening a lawsuit against the tour’s board of directors.
Smith and Stoklos were fined $70,000 and suspended by the Assn. of Volleyball Professionals board members last week for skipping the $100,000 Seal Beach Open to play in a tournament in Spain, a breach of the tour’s players agreement. They served the one-tournament suspension last week at Santa Cruz, but have refused to pay the fine, which was equal to the prize money they earned in Spain.
Smith has earned $86,685 and Stoklos $85,466 on the tour this season and could win as much as $37,000 more this weekend in the tour’s bonus-pool standings. The winning team at Hermosa Beach will split $100,000.
