TAKES THE FIFTH: Central Municipal Presiding Judge Richard W. Stanford Jr., who tried to jail Brad Gates for releasing inmates early, was on vacation last week when an appellate court sided with the sheriff. Back on the bench Monday, Stanford was mum, saying he feared any comments he made would sound like “sour grapes.” . . . Explains the judge: “I think it’s just in our best interests to remain silent on this.” The sheriff points to federal pressure on jail overcrowding as the reason for the early outs.
