Orioles Get Lefferts From Padres for Minor League Pitcher Schullstrom

The Baltimore Orioles acquired left-handed pitcher Craig Lefferts from the San Diego Padres Monday night in exchange for minor league pitcher Erik Schullstrom and a player to be named.

The deal was completed minutes before the 12 p.m. EDT deadline to set possible postseason rosters.

Lefferts, converted this season to starting after a career in the bullpen, is 13-9 with a 3.69 earned-run average in 27 starts.

Lefferts took the loss in San Diego’s 6-2 defeat to the St. Louis Cardinals Monday night. He gave up six runs, five earned, in five innings.

Schullstrom, a 23-year-old right-handed starting pitcher, went into Monday night’s game against London with a 5-8 record and a 3.54 ERA at double-A Hagerstown of the Eastern League. He had a 122 strikeouts in 121 innings.

London handed Hagerstown an 11-5 setback, with Schullstrom taking the defeat.

Schullstrom, who was an All-American at Fresno State and pitched for the Bulldogs in the 1988 College World Series, was the Orioles’ second-round draft choice in the June of 1990 draft.

The 6-5, 220-pounder was 5-6 with a 3.03 ERA for Class-A Frederick in the Carolina League last season, striking out 73 in 86 innings. He pitched a no-hitter against Kinston.
