Though it’s good to read that SAT scores for California’s college-bound seniors are on the rise (“Seniors Gain in SAT Scores,” Aug. 27), even a modest three points overall, after nearly two decades of decline, they are nowhere near what they were during the ‘60s when public education cost a third what it does today.
What this proves is what any teacher will tell you: The real correlation between academic success and the student is directly related to the cohesiveness and care of the family--not state dollars.
Until we get the social fabric sewn back together and unemployment down to a reasonable level, maximum dollars into education will continue to produce minimal results.
