1991: 5-1, second place in Sunset League; reached CIF Southern Section prelims, placing fifth in Division I-A.

Key returners: Ben Flamm, Sr., second place in league last season, one of county’s top runners; John Hendrickson, Sr., team’s No. 2 runner last season; Javier Rosete, Sr., No. 3 man last year; Dan Vielma, Sr., much-improved runner, expected to move into top five; Travis Fisher, So., young runner, second-team all-county as freshman.

Key newcomers: Jon Nichols, Jr., emerged as a leader on sophomore team at end of season; Erich Phinizy, Jr., ran freshman/sophomore last season; Jeff Fennell, So., could be among top seven.

Outlook: Huntington Beach appears to be the favorite for the Sunset League title, but Santa Ana could surprise. Ocean View also appears strong. The Oilers lost only one senior to graduation (Dan Costanzo) and have added depth. “I’d like to see us in the top five in Orange County and see us make it to the CIF finals,” Wood said.
