WORLD IN BRIEF : LEBANON : Move Troops East, U.S. Tells Syria

The United States told Syria and Lebanon that they must decide immediately on a partial troop withdrawal to eastern Lebanon and carry it through as soon as possible. Assistant Secretary of State Edward Djerejian delivered Washington’s toughest statement to date on the issue, saying the United States expects the 40,000 Syrian troops to be redeployed in line with the 1989 Taif accord that ended the 15-year civil war in Lebanon. The deadline specified in the accord is Sept. 23.
