Nuclear power in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, South Africa’s nuclear capabilities and the danger of nuclear weapons’ proliferation in the Middle East will be some of the topics debated when the International Atomic Energy Agency opens its annual meeting next Monday.
The paramount issue will be what to do about Iraq’s refusal to allow IAEA inspectors to examine its nuclear facilities. But Israel’s ability to manufacture and deliver nuclear weapons will be under scrutiny as well.
IAEA delegates, who represent most nations with nuclear power plants, will also consider whether and how to improve the safety of antiquated, Soviet-designed nuclear plants.
