COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Top-Ranked Cal Edges No. 3 Irvine in Water Polo

California, the top-ranked water polo team in the nation, beat third-ranked UC Irvine, 6-5, in the UC Irvine water polo tournament Friday at Corona del Mar High School.
California led, 5-2, early in the third quarter before Steve Gill and Pablo Yrizar scored a goal each and Irvine cut the lead to 5-4. California took a 6-4 lead on a goal by Troy Barnhart with with 1 minute 14 seconds to play. Yrizar scored Irvine’s final goal with 44 seconds left in the game.
Irvine had beaten UCLA, 14-9, earlier Friday behind five goals from Gill and four from Yrizar.
In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:
Pacific 3, UC Irvine 0--Scotleen Risley had 13 kills for visiting Irvine (5-3, 0-1), which was swept 15-1, 15-13, 15-8.
In nonconference women’s volleyball:
San Diego 3, CS Fullerton 0--Nikki Wallace had 15 kills as host San Diego swept CS Fullerton, 15-5, 15-12, 15-13. Alyssa Donaldson had 12 kills for Fullerton (0-5).
In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:
Fresno Pacific 3, Christ College Irvine 1--Despite a losing effort, senior Tami Johnson had 10 kills with teammate Amy Vonacorsi serving five aces for host Christ College (1-6).
In nonconference women’s soccer:
UC Irvine 5, Azusa Pacific 0--Jaycee Leitner scored two goals to lead UC Irvine (3-3-1) past visiting Azusa Pacific. Goalie Amee Chapman recorded her 2nd shutout for the Anteaters this season.
Goalie April Reed had 11 saves for Azusa Pacific.
In nonconference men’s soccer:
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 5, Christ College Irvine 0--Greg Treger led the scoring for Claremont-Mudd-Scripps with three goals. Goalie Travis Grant also had one goal after moving out of the goalkeeper position. Eddie Huerta had 13 saves for Christ College Irvine.
