Gays and lesbians will not be specifically targeted for recruitment by the Los Angeles Police Department, but background checks and questions on sexual orientation that have blocked them from consideration in the past will be eliminated, Police Chief Willie L. Williams told the Gay and Lesbian Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Southern California Wednesday evening.
“All these discriminatory practices have to come to a stop,” he said, reiterating previous statements that the sexual orientation of his officers were of no concern. “I could care less.”
Williams told the gathering at the American Civil Liberties Union Los Angeles office that the department brass would set a different tone when it comes to the issue of sexual harassment of women. “There’s no place in the Police Department and government for males who feel they have to harass women,” he said.
