Santa Monica : Day-Care Zoning Changes
The City Council on Tuesday passed zoning regulations to make it easier--and cheaper--to open large home day-care centers in single-family residential neighborhoods.
The action, although virtually unopposed at the council meeting, ended a five-year battle over encouraging home centers for seven to 12 children while being sensitive to neighbors concerned about traffic and noise.
Under the ordinance, large home day-care centers must be 100 feet apart. The rule protects a homeowner from being surrounded by centers, although council members pointed out that this is not likely because the city has only nine such centers.
