Dell Computer Says It Won’t Lower Prices: Three days after IBM’s decision to slash personal computer prices, Dell Computer Corp. says it is holding the line because demand is so strong. Michael Dell, the company’s founder and chairman, said Dell is “overwhelmed with demand, so if we lowered prices it would be like a self-inflicted wound.” The mail-order PC-maker, based in Austin, Tex., is one of a handful of big companies that make desktop computers that are compatible with International Business Machines Corp. machines. Despite IBM’s move to cut prices, IBM models are still priced higher than Dell.
