NORTHRIDGE : CSUN March Draws Few Participants

Fewer than 100 Cal State Northridge students joined a noontime march Thursday to protest fee hikes and state budget cuts for higher education on the second day of a proposed two-day campus “shutdown.”
Student organizers said the event was a success despite the low turnout Thursday. Several hundred students joined a Wednesday march.
“There has been a lot of participation over the two days as a whole,” Associated Students President Sal Damji said. “The object was to encourage students to be more politically active, and for state legislators to take notice of what is happening on college campuses.”
Students and faculty members were asked by organizers to either boycott class to hear speeches and seminars on the state budget or to discuss the topics in their classrooms.
The Legislature and Gov. Pete Wilson reduced state revenues to the 20-campus Cal State University system by 8.8% this year and raised fees 40%.
CSUN students are especially upset because the budget cuts have prompted the elimination of hundreds of classes in the fall semester.
