Cosmic Cooperation: Orange County space engineers could very well be working at an office in Moscow soon.
McDonnell Douglas Space Systems Co. in Huntington Beach has signed an agreement to cooperate with Russian scientists on a series of space technology research projects.
Space Systems, which builds the Delta II rocket and is working on the proposed Space Station Freedom, plans to examine and possibly use Russian expertise in a variety of fields: materials, advanced mathematics, space systems and long-term manned space flight.
The Russian Academy of Science’s Mechanical Engineering Research Institute in Moscow said it hopes to gain a better understanding of American aerospace business practices and expand its international participation in space work.
“They are very strong in the very high technology areas of engineering,” said David Wensley, a Space Systems executive who will oversee the project.
The two parties will work together in both Huntington Beach and Moscow. Wensley said the agreement did not require any investment by Space Systems in the institute.
