SANTA ANA — It was a case of two teams that were as different as Knights and Dei.
Mater Dei combined an aerial attack with a dominating defense to shut down the La Canada St. Francis Knights, 37-0, at Santa Ana Stadium Friday night.
The Monarchs’ offense was orchestrated by junior Derek Uhl. Uhl, a 6-5, 195-pound junior, completed 17 of 24 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Uhl’s main target was wide receiver Robert Molina. They teamed up 11 times for 161 yards and two scores.
The defense was just as spectacular for Mater Dei (3-0-1), limiting the Knights (2-2) to 101 yards in total offense and six first downs.
Mater Dei jumped out to a 14-0 advantage in the first quarter on a 43-yard touchdown catch by Molina and a one-yard run from Brian Hall. Hall led the Monarchs on the ground, gaining 37 yards in 10 carries.
Uhl hooked up with Leie Sualua for a four-yard touchdown and Molina scored from five yards out for the Monarchs.
