Rubensesque: A Rubens portrait, hidden from public view for more than 140 years, will go on sale in London later this year, the Christie’s auction firm announced. The “Portrait of Madame de Vicq,” long separated from its partner, the “Portrait of Henri de Vicq” which now hangs in the Louvre in Paris, is expected to fetch up to $2.64 million in the December sale.
Out of Russia: Russia plans to return hundreds of drawings stolen by the Nazis in 1940, ending a search spanning four decades for some of the world’s most valuable missing artworks. Russian Culture Minister Yevgeny Sidorov, speaking on Dutch television, confirmed for the first time that the drawings, thought to be worth up to $100 million, were in Russia. He said Moscow intended to return the collection--which includes works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian and Durer--to the Netherlands, although he gave no date.
