NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Former Dodger Is New Member of Hall of Fame

Former Dodger first baseman Wes Parker is among four honorees who will be inducted into the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Hall of Fame on Saturday.

Parker, Claremont McKenna College’s first All-American in 1961, was a six-time Gold Glove winner with the Dodgers.

Parker will be joined by Frank Sacks, who was an athletic administrator from 1962-77; A. J. Shaka, a Rhodes Scholar who was the 1977 NCAA Division III singles champion in tennis, and Mary Tracey, a former cross-country runner who was the first Claremont McKenna woman to receive All-American honors.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Hall of Fame was established in 1990.

Azusa Pacific University is hosting the Rolex California Tennis Championships for National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics schools today through Saturday in Glendora.

Singles and doubles winners will advance to the National Small College championships Oct. 22-25 at Corpus Christi, Tex., which features regional champions at the NCAA Division I, Division II, Division II, National Assn. of Intercollegiate Athletics and junior college levels.

Stanford Athletic Director Ted Leland will be the featured speaker Friday at the Pasadena Quarterback’s Club luncheon at Brookside Country Club.

The club, in its 48th year, is open to all with annual dues of $30. Lunch is $10 for members. $12 for guests.

The 11th annual After-Stroke Athletic Games will be held Friday in Glendora.

The event, partially sponsored by the Organization for After-Stroke Resources, will include competition in horseshoes, bowling, ring ball, target toss, boccie ball and shuffleboard. There will also be a pentathlon involving five events.

A benefit golf tournament sponsored by the Arcadia Rotary Club will be Wednesday at Los Serranos Golf Course in Chino.

The $100 entry fee includes registration, greens fees, cart, continental breakfast, lunch and dinner. Proceeds will be donated to the Lincoln Training Center, a nonprofit organization that provides work with pay for developmentally disabled adults in the San Gabriel Valley.

Diamond Bar has begun registration for adult slo-pitch leagues that will begin Oct. 18.

Men’s leagues and co-ed leagues, featuring eight teams and an 11-game schedule, will run through Jan. 17. Games will be played on Sundays.

Bonita High will sponsor a sports cards and sports memorabilia show Oct. 24 at the school gymnasium.

The show, which will benefit the Bearcat football program, will feature appearances by 1946 Heisman Trophy winner Glenn Davis, who graduated from Bonita in 1939; former Cincinnati Reds pitcher Frank Pastore, who graduated from Damien High, and former Major League pitcher Clyde Wright.

Rosemead begins registration for its adult co-ed slo-pitch softball program Oct. 12.

Registration will continue through Oct. 28 for leagues that begin play Nov. 8. Men’s league games will be played Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Co-ed games will be Sunday afternoons.
