Not Everyone Thrilled Magic Is Back

After watching the evening news (Oct. 1), I have become so overcome with guilt that I must make a public confession. With all that has happened in the last several years, I have tried to keep informed. I have spent at least two hours a day reading two newspapers and I even juggled the reading of up to three books at a time to obtain more detailed information on several important issues.
I sat in my chair, wondering what the lead story would be: Did Perot announce his candidacy? What about crippling unemployment, inadequate medical care, South-Central L.A., the education crisis, the constant killing in Yugoslavia? Then the screen revealed my self-made deception.
Magic just re-signed with the Lakers, and Jerry Buss felt so bad that Magic was going to make only $2.5 million for the next two years (not counting millions in endorsements and business ventures) that he will pay him $14.6 million in his third year, whether he plays or not.
I was so ashamed. I would have cried, but tears stopped coming a long time ago.
