CORONADO — Three touchdowns by Chris Faubert, one on special teams, one on defense and one on offense, weren’t enough Friday night for Laguna Beach, which lost in the final seconds to Coronado, 22-21.
First, the Faubert show.
Second quarter: Laguna Beach quarterback Patrick Wood connected with Faubert for a two-yard touchdown pass play to cap a nine-play, 61-yard drive.
Later in the second quarter: Faubert picked off a pass from quarterback Scott Cole with 13 seconds remaining in the half and went 40 yards for a touchdown to give the Artists (1-4) a 13-0 lead.
Third quarter: Sixteen seconds after Coronado (2-3) made it 13-7 with an eight-yard touchdown run from Sean Sadler, Faubert scored on a 90-yard kickoff return.
But then Coronado’s Cole hooked up with tight end Travis Powell for a nine-yard touchdown pass with 5 minutes 20 seconds to play. Then, with 16 seconds remaining, Cole and Powell connected for a 16-yard touchdown pass play to make it 21-20.
Coronado was penalized for delay of game on the extra point attempt, but Sadler broke two tackles and went eight yards for the winning two-point conversion.
