Countering Columbus: 1992

The following is just a sample of the many counter-quincentenary art projects and events across the country.

LOS ANGELES

* “Columbus Counter Celebration” at the Hollywood Galaxy includes a free performance by the Latino folk music group Quetzalcoatl, today at 5 p.m.

* “Native American Perspectives: 500 Years of Survival” presents contemporary art at the Angels Gate Cultural Center in San Pedro through Dec. 6. A “Gathering of the Elders” will be held today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Angels Gate on sacred land of the Chumash and Gabrieleno tribes.

* “Mayhem: The Invasion,” written, directed by and starring Tim Robbins (with the Actors Gang), will be broadcast Monday on KCRW-FM (89.9) at 1 and 7 p.m. as part of L.A. Theater Works’ “The Play’s the Thing” series.

* “Confrontation 1992” is an exhibition and performance series addressing racism and other issues, at Venice’s Social and Public Art Resource Center through Dec. 19.

* “Monster! Monster?”--an exhibition described as a “visual, visceral response” to Columbus Day, which is celebrated as Dia de la Raza in East L.A.--continues at Self-Help Graphics through Oct. 28.

SAN FRANCISCO

* “The Appearance of Civilization,” by Antenna Theater, is a site-specific event, based on the writings of Bartholemew de las Casas, featuring the avant-garde group’s trademark mix of masks, music and performance art. It will be presented Friday and Saturday night at Rodeo Beach and Oct. 23, 24 and 30 at Ocean Beach.

* “Christophe Colomb,” a San Francisco Opera production of Darius Milhaud’s work, stars Derek Jacobi as the Narrator and will be performed on Dec. 11 and 13.

NEW YORK

* “The Voyage,” a commissioned opera by Philip Glass, with libretto by David Henry Hwang, premieres at the Metropolitan Opera on Monday. It will be broadcast live by the Texaco-Metropolitan International Radio Network, including KUSC-FM (91.5) in L.A. (See story, Page 57.)

* “Christopher Columbus 1992” is the new solo show from Los Angeles actor and performance artist Roger Guenveur Smith. At One Dream Theater on Monday-Wednesday.

ELSEWHERE

* The San Diego Symphony performs Monday at the ancient Mayan capital of Chichen Itza.

* “Land, Spirit, Power: First Nations at the National Gallery of Canada,” exhibits the paintings, sculpture and installations of 18 contemporary American Indian and Canadian Indian artists. In Ottawa.

* “Si Colon Supiera . . . (If Columbus Knew . . . ),” at the Museo de Monterrey in Mexico, includes 11 installations created by artists from North and South America, through Thursday.
