San Gabriel : 85% Oppose Service Cuts

The results of a public opinion survey were presented to the City Council last week, showing that 85% of respondents opposed reduction of city services to compensate for funds taken from the city by the state.
When asked for ideas to raise revenue, 45% of respondents suggested a variety of new taxes, 40% gave no response, 8% wanted no new taxes, and 7% favored less spending.
More than 70% of respondents expressed satisfaction with city services in general. The highest approval was for fire protection, rated satisfactory by 98.1%. At the low end, development review was rated satisfactory by only 40.9%.
Deputy City Administrator John E. Nowak said the participation rate of 7% in this survey was significantly better than the 2% to 3% often seen in general surveys.
Mayor Dominic S. Polimeni called the survey a good guide for the council when it considers a revised budget at a public hearing Oct. 20.
