Candidates in a debate-filled race for the South Bay Hospital District board will meet at 7 p.m. Monday evening in a candidates’ forum organized by the League of Women Voters of the Beach Cities.
Most of the nine candidates for three board seats are expected to attend the forum, which will be broadcast live from Hermosa Beach City Hall on Multivision Cable Channel 3 in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach.
The election comes during a turbulent time for the district, which fired Executive Director Philip Valera less than two weeks ago.
In 1984, the district, which owns the 203-bed South Bay Hospital in Redondo Beach, leased the facility for 30 years to American International Inc. Income from investing the rent provides grants for health programs in Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach.
The candidates are Richard L. (Dick) Fruin, Archie Snow, Mark Bourgeois, James M. Riewer, Gerald L. Looney, Lori A. Herold, Ray Thomas, Aviva Kamin and Harlan J. Curwick.
