Amdahl to Cut Work Force 9%: The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company said it will cut its worldwide work force by about 900 because of a drop in demand for its mainframe computers. The leading maker of IBM-compatible mainframes said the reduction will affect most departments. “We are witnessing a curtailment of capital expenditures and a deferral of customer buying decisions because of the difficult economic times,” said Joseph Zemke, Amdahl’s president and chief executive. To cover the costs of the reduction, Amdahl said it expects to take a one-time charge of $15 million to $20 million against third-quarter earnings.
