BAGHDAD, Iraq — U.N. experts, on a hunt for Iraqi Scud missiles, ended their first day in the field Saturday and said they had encountered no obstacles from the Iraqis.
Iraqi Information Minister Hamid Youssef Hammadi pledged in a statement Saturday to cooperate with the mission and ensure the safety of its members.
A 50-member inspection team is checking reports that Iraq may still have hundreds of the 819 Soviet Scuds and their longer-range variants, Hussain, Abbas and Sejeel, which it developed domestically. All are banned under the terms of the Gulf War cease-fire.
