EPA Urges Standards for Cars Running on Natural Gas: The Environmental Protection Agency has proposed the first-ever emission standards for cars, trucks and buses powered by natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas, a move that could help pave the way for expansion of the new market. The limits are nearly identical to standards applied to gasoline, diesel and methanol-fueled vehicles. They would become effective with 1994 models. The natural gas industry, which has virtually no share of the current vehicle fuel market, has targeted the transportation industry as a growth area. But uncertainty about the lack of emission standards has hampered the manufacturing and sale of such vehicles.
