ATHENS : College Mentor Program Offered

Southern California Edison is sponsoring a mentorship program, the Interscholastic Alliance of African-American Males.
Based on the campus of Los Angeles Southwest College, the program began last month with 75 teen-agers from two Los Angeles Unified School District high schools--Middle College and Washington Prep--and Inglewood High.
California Community College Chancellor David Mertes said the program will enable disadvantaged and at-risk young black men to attend college classes and remove them from the pressure of gangs.
In addition to working with mentors from the business community, the young men will receive career counseling, access to career-related internships, and opportunities to attend conferences and events focusing on African-American issues.
Participating organizations include Cal State Dominguez Hills, Upward Bound, Los Angeles Southwest College and the UCLA Partnership Program.
