A 39-year-old Mira Mesa man shot and killed his 17-year-old neighbor early Saturday and was later booked into County Jail on suspicion of murder, police said.
The incident occurred shortly after 2 a.m. in the 7600 block of Parma Lane in Mira Mesa. When officers responded, they found Robert Kennedy Toman lying in the street, with a gunshot wound to the head.
A neighbor, Charles F. Baker, approached and admitted shooting the teen-ager, a San Diego Police spokesman said.
Toman was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, where he died in the emergency room at 3:01 a.m. Police said the motive for the shooting remains unclear but that Baker may have tried to detain the victim for suspected criminal activity.
A .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun was recovered at the scene. Homicide detectives are investigating.
