Rockets Are Fire Hazard

On Oct. 5, you carried an article on the hazards of model rockets (“Model Rockets Pose Serious Fire Hazard, Officials Say”). You would be doing your readers a service to let them know that the oldest and largest experimental rocketry organization in the United States is based here in Ventura County. The Pacific Rocket Society, recognizing the problems model rocketeers have in flying locally, sponsors model rocket launches for interested groups several times a year. These launches are held in a remote area of the Mojave Desert and are conducted under the supervision of representatives licensed by the state fire marshal.
With its many square miles of dry brush, Ventura County is a poor location to engage in pyrotechnic activities such as model rocketry. If your readers would like to receive more information on our launches, they may write to me directly at 1825 N. Oxnard Blvd., Suite 24, Oxnard, CA 93030
