Senior Anna Zaricki swept in singles and the doubles team of Jennifer Millard and Nicki Yasutake won its three doubles sets to lead Dana Hills to an 11-7 victory over Corona del Mar in the Southern Section Division I girls’ tennis quarterfinals Tuesday at Corona del Mar High School.
The victory earned third-seeded Dana Hills (20-2) a berth in the semifinals and a rematch with second-seeded Santa Barbara San Marcos (21-1). San Marcos defeated Dana Hills, 12-6, this season. Corona del Mar finished 15-5.
“We feel we’ll have a better shot at them (San Marcos) this time,” Dolphins Coach John Stephens said. “We lost eight of the nine doubles matches last time. I think we’ll play better. We wanted a chance to play them again, and now we’ll get that chance.”
Zaricki, playing at No. 2 singles, defeated Heather Nelson, 6-1, Megan Wachtler, 6-0, and the Sea Kings’ No. 1 singles player, Marcie Asch, 6-0. Zaricki, who is 67-5 overall this season, defeated Asch, 6-3, in an earlier nonleague match against Corona del Mar that Dana Hills won, 12-6.
“Zaricki played great,” Stephens said. “I felt like she played up to her level today.”
Millard and Yasutake defeated Jenny Glasgow and Kristine Winton, 7-5, Alicia Boyce and Christie O’Meara, 6-3, and Ranee Rhodes and Jenny Murdy, 6-2.
“I thought we played well and with a lot of heart,” Corona del Mar Coach Ellen Bryant said. “Easily two matches could have gone one way or the other. We played hard and gave it our best effort. Dana Hills is a very solid team up and down (its lineup).”
