SOUTHERN SECTION GIRLS’ TENNIS PLAYOFFS : Los Alamitos Tries to Make It Back-to-Back Championships

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Los Alamitos will seek its second consecutive Southern Section girls’ tennis title today in the team finals at the Claremont Tennis Club.

The Griffins (22-1), who won the Division 2-A championship last year, will play North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake (21-1), the Mission League champion, in the Division III match at 10 a.m.

Also vying for titles will be South Coast League champion Dana Hills (21-2) and Pacific Coast League winner Laguna Beach (23-1).

Dana Hills, seeded third, plays Palos Verdes Peninsula (23-0) in the Division I match at 9 a.m. The Panthers, seeded first, won the Division 4-A title in 1991 and have not lost a match in the last two years. Dana Hills beat Santa Barbara San Marcos, 10-8, in Thursday’s semifinals.

Laguna Beach, seeded first, plays Pacific League champion Arcadia (18-0) in the Division II match at 9:30 a.m. The Artists tied Edison, 9-9, in the semifinals but advanced with a 78-74 edge in games.

For Los Alamitos Coach Debbie Fleming, the match that she’s been looking forward to all season is finally here--and not a moment too soon.

“I’m getting nervous,” she said.

Fleming says whether the Griffins can repeat will depend on how well the doubles teams play.

“They (Harvard-Westlake) have a very good No. 1 singles player (Lindsay Wasserman),” Fleming said. “She’s ranked 16th in the 18-and-under (in Southern California). We are conceding three to her right there. But I think we are pretty even after that.”

Los Alamitos, seeded first, qualified for the finals with a 15-3 victory over Palm Desert in the semifinals.
