NOTEBOOK : Bell May Get Probation for Kicking Incident
- Share via
The Bell High football program may be placed on probation because one of its varsity players kicked a Chatsworth player in the groin during a City Section 3-A Division quarterfinal game Nov. 25 at Bell.
The incident is under investigation by the City Section athletic office and a decision may be made this next week.
“I’m almost certain that Bell’s football program will be placed on probation,” City Section Athletic Director Hal Harkness said. “Probation only serves a warning. There is no penalty involved. But it opens the door for more severe penalties if another incident takes place.”
Chatsworth was leading top-seeded Bell, 31-6, with 6:06 left in the fourth quarter when the game was stopped because of continued violence between plays. The deciding factor was when Chatsworth linebacker Robert Webb was kicked in the groin by a Bell running back.
The Bell running back who kicked Webb was suspended from school for two days and will not be allowed to participate in other sports this school year. He also will be suspended from the first football game next season.
The East L.A. College men’s soccer team is seeking its second state title in three seasons in the State Junior College championships this weekend at Los Positas College in Livermore.
The Huskies (21-0-3) entered the four-team tournament as the No. 1 seed and the state’s only unbeaten team. East L.A. has outscored its opponents, 115-14, this season. They won the South Coast Conference championship, their fourth title in five seasons.
East L.A., played fourth-seeded Chabot (18-2-2) Saturday. The winner will advance to today’s final against either El Camino or De Anza.
