ALGIERS : Tension Continues
Ninety Algerian military officers and soldiers are to go on trial for their lives Sunday. They are charged with conspiring with the Islamic fundamentalist opposition.
The trial, originally scheduled for last weekend but then postponed, will contribute to continuing tension between the military-backed ruling committee, which took power last January, and the fundamentalist Islamic Salvation Front. The Front had been about to become the world’s first Islamic government to take power in a free election.
The government has been unable to eradicate the Salvation Front, which was banned last March but immediately went underground. More than 250 police and soldiers have died in fighting since the crackdown against the fundamentalists began.
