Meat-Labeling Rules Unveiled: The Bush Administration has unveiled rules that will require nutritional labels on meat products beginning in July, 1994. The regulations mimic the rules released this week by the Food and Drug Administration to cover processed foods. The Agriculture Department, which wrote the meat-labeling rules, said they will be voluntary for raw meats. The two sets of rules will affect virtually every food package in U.S. grocery stores. Only about a third of meat products now carry labels giving nutritional information. The new rules will require disclosure of 13 nutrients, such as protein and fat, apply definitions to terms such as “light” and limit health-benefit claims for foods.
