1992 PREP FOOTBALL ALL-STARS : Jacks-of-All-Trades: The Times’ 1992 All-Star Team Can Do It All : Preps: Versatility is a trademark of the area’s 23 best players, many of whom played offense and defense.

In what has become an era of specialization at the collegiate and professional levels, many talented high school football players still play offense and defense.
Nowhere is that versatility reflected more than on The Times’ 1992 All-Glendale football team.
The 23 players selected to the All-Glendale team were selected by Times sportswriters based on nominations received from area coaches, all of whom were asked to participate.
Players named to the first team will be guests of The Times at an awards breakfast Jan. 17 at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. Winners of the Glendale back, lineman and coach-of-the-year awards will be announced at the breakfast.
Here is a position-by-position look at The Times’ 1992 All-Glendale team:
RUNNING BACK
Crescenta Valley was noted for its defense, but the Falcon offense could be explosive at times because of junior running back Erik La Com, who gained 843 yards in 135 carries. La Com scored 13 touchdowns for the Falcons and was at his best in Crescenta Valley’s biggest games.
James Razumich of Glendale played running back and linebacker. Razumich, a senior, gained 579 yards in 112 carries and scored eight touchdowns.
QUARTERBACK
Playing quarterback is difficult enough without having your father watching your every move from the sidelines, but Shane Gerard of Marshall handled his leadership role with aplomb.
Gerard, a senior who is the son of Marshall Coach Ken Gerard, passed for more than 1,500 yards and 19 touchdowns. He led the Barristers to the second round of the City Section 4-A Division playoffs.
RECEIVERS
Armando Valadez was one of the most dangerous components in a Franklin offense that relied heavily on the pass. Valadez, a senior, caught 41 passes for 810 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also averaged 15.6 yards per punt return and 28.7 yards per kickoff return.
Senior Brett Miller of Crescenta Valley made the all-area team for the second consecutive year. Miller caught only 27 passes for 469 yards and four touchdowns, but his skills are such that he was selected to the first-team All-Pacific League for the third consecutive season.
Tight end Tony Covarrubias caught 30 passes for 499 yards and two touchdowns for Eagle Rock, which won the Northeastern League championship and advanced to the City 3-A playoffs.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Glendale senior Brian Flette played center and linebacker. A first-team All-Glendale selection in 1991, Flette was one of the most consistent players for the Dynamiters.
Senior Ed Mendoza of Franklin played guard, tackle and center for the Panthers. A three-year starter, Mendoza had the team’s highest blocking efficiency rating (85%).
Mike Parker of Flintridge Prep was a two-way starter and was one of the reasons the Rebels qualified for the Southern Section playoffs.
Royal Kim of La Canada provided bulk up front for a Spartan team that was physically overmatched. Kim, a senior, consistently completed his blocking assignments.
Felix Urrutia anchored the line for a Ribet Academy offense that was one of the best in the Southern Section Small Schools Division.
KICKER
David Fielder of Crescenta Valley played quarterback, kicker and punter. He made 11 of 12 field-goal attempts and passed for 671 yards and four touchdowns.
DEFENSIVE LINE
Jon Berg of Crescenta Valley was a Times All-Glendale selection as a sophomore. He was injured for most of his junior season, but he returned this year to help make the Falcon defense one of the most tenacious in the Southern Section. Although the 5-foot-9, 165-pound Berg was among the smallest linemen in Division II, his contributions to the Falcons’ success were immeasurable.
Senior Ben Kadletz was a consistent player for St. Francis, which played a difficult schedule that included Division I semifinalist Mater Dei and Division I finalist Loyola.
Armando Gonzalez of Verdugo Hills was a two-way starter. He made more than 90 unassisted tackles and was an effective player on offense at center and guard.
LINEBACKERS
Paul Lopez of Crescenta Valley was named first-team All-Pacific League at linebacker and running back. Lopez, a senior, was one of the many outstanding players for a Crescenta Valley defense that gave up only 192.7 yards a game. He gained 947 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.
Victor Huezo of Crescenta Valley was selected All-Southern Section after making 108 tackles. Huezo was at his best in big games, coming up with a key interception during the Falcons’ victory over Hart in the Southern Section Division II quarterfinals.
Jesus Pasten of Eagle Rock was selected All-City after helping the Eagles to the Northeastern League championship. Pasten, a senior who also played fullback, made 70 unassisted tackles, intercepted two passes and recovered four fumbles.
Jaiya Figueras of Glendale is probably the most highly recruited player from the area this year. The senior was named All-Pacific League for his play at linebacker and defensive back.
Aman Abye of Marshall was selected All-City and most valuable player of the Northern Conference for his contributions on offense and defense. Abye, a senior, gained 660 yards, averaged seven yards a carry and rushed for seven touchdowns. He caught 18 passes for 360 yards and four touchdowns. He also intercepted four passes, including a game-saving interception in the 4-A playoffs against Granada Hills.
Eric Jaimes of Franklin moves up to the first team after being selected to the second team in 1991. Jaimes, a senior, was a defensive back, wide receiver and kicker. He intercepted five passes, giving him 18 for his career. He scored three touchdowns, and made seven of nine field-goal attempts and 14 of 16 conversions.
Senior Eddie Powell was an explosive player for Verdugo Hills as a defensive back, kick returner and receiver. Powell was selected All-City after intercepting nine passes. He also caught four touchdown passes as a receiver.
Nathan Dishington of Hoover made the all-area team as a defensive player, although his contributions were mainly as quarterback. Dishington, a senior, passed for 1,763 yards and 12 touchdowns.
