BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Canyons Opens Conference Play With 76-66 Win

Jason Joynes scored 21 points and G.C. Marcaccini added 18 as College of the Canyons beat Santa Barbara, 76-66, in a men’s Western State Conference basketball opener at Canyons.
The Cougars (10-8) led, 31-25, at halftime before opening a 24-point bulge.
In other men’s games:
Cal State Los Angeles 68, The Master’s 59: Mark Greene scored 17 points to lead the visiting Eagles in a nonconference game.
The Mustangs (6-8) shot 36% from the field and had eight shots blocked. Center Emeka Okenwa led The Master’s with 22 points.
Cal State Los Angeles is 8-2.
Chaffey 87, Antelope Valley 85--Danny Prince, Darnell Cherry and John Puckett each scored 19 points for host Antelope Valley in a nonconference game.
Calvin Ford paced Chaffey (9-5) with 26 points and teammate Lelan McDougal added 23.
WOMEN
Glendale 63, Oxnard 51--Stephanie Ball scored 14 points and had seven steals to lead the Vaqueros to a nonconference win at home. Glendale (7-6) has won five of six games.
Ventura 63, Valley 36--Nicole Ellis scored 24 points to lead the Pirates (9-4) in a Western State Conference opener.
Valley (14-4) was held to season lows of 13 points in the first half and 36 for the game.
The Monarchs played without starter Lucinda Silva, who was ill, and key reserve Pam Starks, who suffered a knee injury in Valley’s previous game.
Moorpark 80, Pierce 75--Yolanda Davidian scored 28 points and Shani Samuel 24 but it was not enough for the Brahmas (4-9) in a WSC opener.
BOYS
La Canada 60, Santa Clara 44--La Canada’s Richard Mandeville scored a game-high 18 points to help defeat the Saints (10-5) in a nonleague game. Dave Varela scored 16 for Santa Clara.
