BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Dominates El Toro by 58

Mater Dei, the top-ranked boys’ basketball team in Orange County, played its first South Coast League game Friday and won easily, 101-43, over host El Toro.
Mater Dei led, 55-21, at halftime, and, 82-25, after three quarters. Clay McKnight scored 15 points, including three three-pointers, and Terence Wilborn added 13 for the Monarchs (16-1, 1-0 in league). Miles Simon, David Drakeford and Marmet Williams each scored 12 points for Mater Dei, which had six players score in double figures.
Jim Lewis scored 14 points for El Toro (4-10, 0-1).
In other South Coast League basketball:
Capistrano Valley 76, Mission Viejo 60--Corey Kost scored 29 points and hit two three-pointers for eighth-ranked Capistrano Valley (10-7, 1-0). Doug Reindl scored 21 points for Mission Viejo (6-9, 0-1), while teammate Jeff Carr had 14 points.
In the Express League:
Heritage Christian 71, Bethel Baptist 49--Ryan Drabek scored 17 points and Tom Houser added 16 for Heritage Christian (6-0, 3-0). Dale Moore had 24 points for Bethel Baptist.
In the Olympic League:
Brethren Christian 69, Ontario Christian 52--Reggie Davis scored 19 points for Brethren Christian (7-7, 2-0), while teammates Scott Thomas and Richard Mendoza each had 15 points. Eric DeGroot scored 19 points for Ontario Christian (3-7, 0-2).
Capistrano Valley Christian 72, Calvary Chapel 52--Troy Rodarmel scored 24 points, Chuck Carlsen 18 and Scott Harline 17 for Capistrano Valley Christian (12-1, 2-0). Calvary Chapel is 6-8, 0-1.
Whittier Christian 62, Cerritos Valley Christian 56--Kwadwo Boachie made six of six free throws in the fourth quarter to help ice the victory for host Whittier Christian (6-7, 1-1). Tyler Ream scored 16 points and Jeff Rutter added 13 points for Whittier Christian. Steve DeGraff scored 19 points for Valley Christian (1-1 in league).
In the Sunset League:
Huntington Beach 63, Westminster 33--Tony Gonzalez scored 24 points and had 10 rebounds for second-ranked Huntington Beach (12-3, 2-0).
Teammates Tommy Walden and Matt Ambrose each scored nine points and guard Bryan Chang had six assists. Lac Tan scored 11 points for Westminster (0-2 in league).
Edison 67, Santa Ana 43--Micah Kroeger scored 12 points and Geoff Cochrane added 11 for Edison (10-3, 2-0).
Marina 48, Servite 44--Kevin Sullivan and Vlade Nieto scored 17 points each for visiting Marina (8-6, 1-1). Center Mark Seaton scored 17 points for Servite (4-8, 0-2).
Ocean View 70, Fountain Valley 51--Jim Harris had 17 points and Kevin Johnson had 11 to lead Ocean View (2-0 in league) past host Fountain Valley (7-5, 1-1). Carter Hogan led Fountain Valley with 12 points and nine rebounds.
Nonleague games:
Orange Lutheran 72, Western Christian 61--Tom Howard had 17 points for Orange Lutheran (5-6). Western Christian is 4-9.
Western 68, Montebello Schurr 44--Forward Frank Floyd led host Western (10-4) with 23 points and 15 rebounds. Teammate Neil Hensley had 16 points and five assists.
