Walnut : Shopping Center OKd

A proposal to build a shopping center that will be anchored by an Albertson’s grocery store and a Sav-On Drug outlet received the go-ahead from the City Council last week.
In a 4-1 vote, the council approved a permit for a 128,300-square-foot shopping center along Amar Road about 300 feet west of Grand Avenue.
The project is being developed by Orange-based Quong Enterprises.
Mayor William T. Choctaw cast the lone dissenting vote. He objected to the conditions of the permit, which he said should prohibit the sale of alcohol at Albertson’s and Sav-On. He said the 12-acre site is too close to Mt. San Antonio College to allow liquor sales.
However, the council approved the project on the condition that store signs advertising the sale of alcohol be prohibited.
