KIRKWOOD, Calif. — An explosion and fire ripped through a condominium complex next to the Kirkwood ski resort Wednesday. Officials say at least five people were injured and two were unaccounted for.
Alpine County asked surrounding communities for help, and about 80 firefighters still were battling flames Wednesday night. Five people were taken to hospitals in Carson City, Nev., and in South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
Two youngsters underwent emergency treatment at Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. Their names, ages and conditions were not immediately available.
Three other people were being treated at Carson Tahoe Hospital in Carson City, but their injuries did not appear to be serious, a hospital official said.
The explosion occurred about 2:15 p.m. at the Sun Meadows condominiums next to the ski resort.
Kirkwood spokesman Greg Murtha said 10 units were ablaze.
