Luis Pedroza, director of the Chicano Resource Center, considers himself a “new breed librarian” who is committed to changing the library to reflect changes in the community around it. The center, in the county’s East Los Angeles Library at 4801 E. 3rd St., includes more than 10,000 books, videos and magazines to put Chicanos in touch with their Mexican and U.S. culture. “It’s a real happening collection,” said Pedroza, 31, who has a master’s degree from UC Berkeley. Pedroza grew up in Pico Rivera after his family moved from Tijuana. Despite an 85% budget cut this fiscal year, Pedroza’s position was saved. Along with the collection, he is organizing new activities, including an art exhibit, a poetry reading and a discussion by Chicano war veterans.
