The Sliding-Home Problem: Who Deserves the Blame?
What is happening to the unfortunate people in Anaheim Hills regarding the landslide is criminal. No, Mother Nature is not the criminal; the insurance industry is.
If one buys homeowners insurance, one expects to have (his/her) home protected by the insurance he or she buys. The law should require insurance companies to spell out in big letters and simple language what their policies do not cover and whether the homeowner can purchase something to cover the exclusion. This is how earthquake coverage works.
To have tragedy befall your home and then read in the fine print that your insurance doesn’t cover your particular flavor of tragedy is just shy of dishonest business practice.
No, I don’t live in Anaheim Hills, and I haven’t lost my home. But I am wondering what is lurking in my policy. How about yours?
