Malcolm (Mal) Hancock, 56, a cartoonist who drew several comic strips under the pen name “Mal.” His characters Phil and Del had appeared in the Philadelphia Inquirer’s Sunday comic section since 1987. His other strips included “Willies,” “The Lumpets,” and “Fenwick.” He also published three books and individual cartoons in such magazines as Playboy, the Saturday Evening Post and the National Review. On Tuesday in Great Falls, Mont., of cancer.
