Reno’s Confirmation Hearing to Start Tuesday

WASHINGTON — Atty. Gen.-designate Janet Reno’s confirmation hearing will begin Tuesday before the Senate Judiciary Committee, a committee aide said Wednesday.
The Justice Department is the only Cabinet department without a Senate-confirmed leader. President Clinton’s first nominee, insurance company lawyer Zoe Baird, withdrew amid criticism over her hiring of illegal immigrants and her failure to pay Social Security taxes for them.
Clinton named Reno, who has been the state attorney in Dade County, Fla., for 15 years, on Feb. 11. The Miami prosecutor completed the committee’s questionnaire on her background and finances last week. The FBI report on her was submitted to the committee shortly before it scheduled the hearing, the aide said.
