TOUGH TIMES: Although book sales have continued to increase during the recession and bookstores generally have done better than the overall economy, many independent booksellers are struggling. . . . Charlotte Gellis, who’s calling it quits after six years as owner of the Dana Point Book Store, believes independents play an important role. “The chains don’t carry the kinds of things we carry,” she says. “It’s the difference between going to McDonald’s or a fine restaurant.”
